Why I Wrote This Book—and Why It Might Be What You’ve Been Needing Too

Welcome, My Sister and Friend, to a Journey of Professional Building for All of Us

This book project has been more than I could have ever dreamed. As an author, I’ve had the honor of writing and contributing to multiple published works—but none have impacted my life like this one.

Let me tell you why.

Being an Expert Doesn’t Shield You from Life

When I began writing Building While Broken, I approached it like any other project—structured, mapped out, and focused. But a few months in, I was hit with an overwhelming wave of grief. It knocked the wind out of me—emotionally, mentally, and physically. My health declined, and I spent days confined to my bedroom and hospital beds.

My Past Became My Present

Most self-help books are written from a place of “I’ve been through it, and now I’ll show you the way.” That was my original intention too. But life had a different plan. The very experiences I thought were behind me became my present reality. I had a choice: pause the project and wait until I “felt better,” or move forward, be transparent, and write from where I truly was.

I chose the latter.

I Didn’t Just Write the Book—I Lived It

My daily practice became simple: Write. Read. Practice.
As I wrote, I began to experience my own healing. I rebuilt myself word by word, chapter by chapter. I uncovered pain I wasn’t ready to face and found peace I didn’t know I needed. The guidance I give in this book? I lived it. I leaned on it. I still do.

And that’s why I’m proud to stand behind every page.

This Book Is a Blueprint for Discovery

Overcoming a lifetime of setbacks doesn’t happen overnight—but it is possible. Use this book and the accompanying resource guides as tools to heal, rediscover your power, and extend grace to yourself every step of the way.

With Love,

Dr. Michelle S. Thomas
